Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are contestants allowed to premake sugarpaste figurines, flowers etc for decoration on the cakes or does all of that need to be done during the 3 hours on site decorating?
Answer: Yes, all decorations (molding, decorating, piping etc ) must be made during the 3 hours. This is to ensure fairness and that all decorations are made by the contestants. That’s the challenge– you’ll need to think of a design that allows you to do that. You cannot prepare the figurines beforehand, but you can prepare your sugarpaste or your icings by colouring the amount you need, and, if you’re using sugarpaste, adding tylose to harden it.
Please understand that if we allow contestants to pre-make their decorations, there is no way of checking that the decorations were made by them and not by someone else. It’s easy for decorations to be pre-made, and then simply assembled during the 3 hours, but as long as we cannot check and confirm that it is 100% your work, we cannot allow it – this is to be fair to all contestants and ensures a level playing field.
2. What do I need to bring for the 3 hours of decorating?
Answer: Items contestants can bring for the 3 hours decorating are:
1. Pre-iced and pre-covered cake (cake must be plain and simply covered in basic layer of icing. For rolled fondant / sugarpaste covering, your cake may be pre-covered in the base layer of sugarpaste)
2. Pre-sculpted cake – if design requires it (but one side must be around 9" length)
3. Pre-coloured icings
4. If design requires 3D molded decorations, you may harden your sugarpaste / rolled fondant with a hardener like Tylose before, but no pre-molded decorations will be allowed.
5. Sprinkles, jimmies, shaped quins, sparkles etc may be used
6. .All necessary tools and equipment
What cannot be used:
1. Plastic figurines or decorations
2. Pre-molded decorations or flowers
3. Icing images
4. Any decorations that have been pre-made.
These items, if brought, will be barred from usage during the 3 hours of decorating.
3. Can I cover my cake board with rolled fondant / sugarpaste?
Answer: Your cake board must be plain cake boards, but yes, you may.cover them with sugarpaste and make them an extension of your design. What you cannot use is anything else but cake boards - you cannot use pretty plates, cake display stands, etc, as this will be an unfair advantage.
4. What is the accepted dimension for sculpted cakes?
Answer: Although the competition rule states that cakes must have a minimum height of 3" and at least 9" (diameter or length of one side, if sculpted cake), a sculpted cake does not need to have a uniform height of 3", as long as a most of the cake is more than 3" height.
